Roche has put all future investment decisions in Germany on hold, according to Daniel Steiners, head of Roche Germany. He said recent government decisions affecting the pharmaceutical sector had “destroyed a great deal of trust.”

The move follows a bill passed by German lawmakers that will require pharmaceutical companies to provide higher rebates on most branded medicines. The measure is intended to control costs for the country’s health insurance system.

The pause contrasts with Roche’s recent multi-billion-dollar development collaborations in other markets, including China.
