The AI industry is facing a financial bottleneck as cheap, abundant capital dries up. Lenders and investors are becoming more selective, demanding clearer paths to profitability and positive cash flow rather than backing ventures based on an AI label alone. Persistently high borrowing costs and the enormous capital spending needed to build AI infrastructure are driving the shift.
The strain is visible across the sector. Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta are under cash-flow pressure from their massive infrastructure investments. Smaller, specialized AI cloud providers, known as neoclouds, face greater stress: some have debt trading at distressed levels as financing options dwindle.
The tighter funding environment raises uncertainty about the future pace of AI development.
