Alphabet’s Google is in preliminary talks with the U.S. Department of Defense about a data-security project for the Golden Dome missile defense initiative, according to sources familiar with the matter. The discussions reportedly focus on using Google’s storage, networking and cybersecurity infrastructure to protect data feeding the program’s core command-and-control software.

The potential partnership would fit the Pentagon’s move toward a multi-vendor consortium for the large-scale defense architecture. It also reflects Google’s growing push into national security contracts, an area it has approached cautiously since employee backlash led the company to exit the Pentagon’s Project Maven AI contract in 2018.
