Google's 'Suncatcher' prototype satellite data center is now operational in orbit following its October 1 launch. [4, 5] The project achieved a milestone when its onboard Gemma 4 AI model, running on a custom Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), successfully generated a haiku about being in space and transmitted it back to Earth. [12, 13] This event marks the first time a data-center-class AI processor has performed such a task in orbit. [6]

The satellite is the first step in a long-term research initiative to test the feasibility of hosting large-scale AI infrastructure in space, powered by near-constant sunlight. [9, 14] This initial mission will gather data on how Google's hardware withstands the radiation and thermal extremes of space. [4] The company plans a follow-up mission with two more satellites in 2027 to test inter-satellite communication links. [7, 13]
