Vedanta Ltd has doubled annual zinc production capacity at its Gamsberg mine in South Africa to 500,000 tonnes. The expansion followed an investment of nearly $600 million.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa inaugurated the second phase of the project and highlighted its importance for the country’s industrial growth. The expansion makes Gamsberg one of the world’s largest zinc operations.

The increase supports Vedanta’s broader goal of producing 3 million tonnes of zinc annually across its operations in India and South Africa. It also strengthens the company’s ability to meet rising global demand for zinc, which is used to galvanize steel in construction, automotive and manufacturing industries.

Ramaphosa encouraged Vedanta to consider establishing zinc smelting capacity in South Africa to process more of the metal domestically.
