The Canadian federal government, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford are set to unveil a support package for the country’s steel, auto and critical minerals sectors on October 21, 2026. The joint announcement is scheduled for Parliament Hill.
The measures are intended to help the industries manage the effects of U.S. tariffs and other trade disruptions. A source said support for critical minerals is a key part of the package.
The plan is also intended to strengthen Canada’s position in the electric vehicle supply chain by supporting development in mineral-rich regions. Any government subsidies could affect competition in steel and other materials markets across the highly integrated North American economy.
