TotalEnergies announced on Monday its decision to appeal a June 25, 2026, judgment by the Paris Judicial Court. The landmark ruling, based on France's "duty of vigilance" law, had found the company responsible for the planet-warming emissions released by customers using its fuel products.
The company argues that climate change is a global phenomenon that falls outside the scope of this law and is primarily the responsibility of states. TotalEnergies contends that the law pertains to risks from its own activities and its supply chain, not the activities of its clients, over which it has no control. The case will now move to the Paris Court of Appeal.
