Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) plans to build an additional 3-nanometer (3nm) fabrication plant in Tainan, Taiwan, to meet strong customer demand. CEO C.C. Wei confirmed the decision during the company’s third-quarter earnings call. Volume production is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2028.
TSMC expects continued high demand for its advanced process technology, particularly for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing applications. The new facility will add to a 3nm plant already under construction in Tainan’s Southern Taiwan Science Park. That plant is expected to begin production in the first half of 2027.
The Tainan expansion is part of TSMC’s broader effort to increase advanced manufacturing capacity globally. The company is also progressing with a 3nm fab in Arizona, which is reportedly ahead of schedule for production in the third quarter of 2027. A second fab in Japan will also use 3nm technology.
