Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is exploring a major expansion of its U.S. manufacturing capacity, with Texas among the locations under consideration. CEO C.C. Wei said on an earnings call that the company has sent teams to Texas to assess opportunities amid surging demand for artificial intelligence chips.
TSMC also confirmed discussions about joining Elon Musk’s proposed Terafab semiconductor project in Texas. No agreement has been reached. Wei said any facility in the project that makes TSMC chips must be operated by TSMC, while Musk has previously said his companies would run the facility.
