Novo Nordisk said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Awiqli® (insulin icodec-abae) as the first and only once-weekly basal insulin for children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes.

The approval gives this patient group a less frequent option for managing blood sugar than standard daily insulin injections. The company said the regimen could improve adherence and quality of life for patients and caregivers.

The approval comes as type 2 diabetes prevalence rises among children and adolescents.
