An expert panel for the European Union’s drug regulator has recommended marketing authorization for Eli Lilly’s weight-loss pill, Foundayo (orforglipron). The recommendation marks a significant step toward a European launch, where Novo Nordisk’s rival therapy, Wegovy, currently has a first-mover advantage.

The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) issued a positive opinion for the once-daily treatment for weight management and type 2 diabetes in adults. The European Commission will review the recommendation and make the final decision, as competition with Novo Nordisk intensifies in the obesity drug market.
