OpenAI has acquired Pierre Computer, a developer tools startup, for an undisclosed amount. The company's technology, including a "Code Storage" feature, was already embedded in OpenAI's Codex, an AI model that generates code. The acquisition will lead to a deeper integration of these tools.
The move is part of OpenAI's strategy to build a more comprehensive, AI-native hub for software development. Analysts note this positions OpenAI to compete more directly with established code repositories like Microsoft's GitHub, as AI agents increasingly handle more programming tasks. As part of the deal, Pierre Computer's existing open-source projects will remain open-source.
