Equinix will now directly fund the power infrastructure required for its data center expansions. This strategy addresses a major industry bottleneck by covering the costs of grid upgrades and new transmission capacity. The company aims to prevent local ratepayers from subsidizing the specialized infrastructure needed for power-intensive facilities.

The data center giant signed a 20-year agreement with Central Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (CGEMC) for its facility in Hampton, Georgia. Under this deal, Equinix will pay all costs associated with serving the site's significant power demand. This model ensures the broader public does not shoulder the financial burden of the utility upgrades.

Equinix and other data center REITs face intense pressure to expand capacity for soaring AI workloads. By proactively funding power solutions, the company intends to secure its growth pipeline in a capital-intensive environment. This approach helps maintain long-term customer demand while navigating grid constraints.
