Shares of cell tower REITs, including Crown Castle (CCI) and American Tower (AMT), surged on October 9, 2026. The rally followed an announcement the prior evening that SpaceX would acquire a nationwide portfolio of low-band 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management for approximately $8 billion. In pre-market trading, Crown Castle rose more than 10%, while American Tower gained more than 6%.

Investors viewed the acquisition as a potential catalyst for the tower industry, positioning SpaceX as a possible fourth major wireless carrier tenant for tower operators. Low-band spectrum supports broad coverage and in-building penetration, addressing a gap in SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile ambitions and making a terrestrial network build-out more credible. The prospect of new revenue from a well-capitalized tenant helped drive a sector-wide revaluation of tower infrastructure owners.

Traditional telecom carriers, including T-Mobile and Verizon, sold off on concerns about increased competition. Tower stocks rose, however, as analysts said even a satellite-focused network would likely need deployments on towers and rooftops. Crown Castle and American Tower rallied despite a mixed broader market.
