Alphabet’s autonomous-driving unit, Waymo, announced its first international expansion: plans to launch a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Toronto. The move advances the company’s efforts to commercialize its technology globally.
The initial phase will begin shortly, with manually driven vehicles mapping Toronto’s streets and collecting data. Waymo is targeting a public launch in 2028.
The company will participate in Ontario’s automated vehicle pilot program and work with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management on local operations. The expansion builds on Waymo’s existing Canadian relationships, including manufacturing partner Magna International and investor Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
