American Electric Power (AEP) plans to invest approximately $4 billion in a 702-megawatt fuel cell project near Cheyenne, Wyoming. The facility will supply electricity to Google’s data centers in the area under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

Cheyenne Fuel Cell, LLC, which is approximately 92% owned by AEP, will develop the project. The facility will use Bloom Energy fuel cell technology, which generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction without combusting natural gas.

Construction is slated to begin in 2026, and the plant is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2028. The project also includes plans to integrate carbon capture technology to provide near-zero-emissions power.
