TotalEnergies announced its decision to appeal a Paris Judicial Court judgment on July 27, 2026. The ruling concerns the application of the French duty of vigilance law to corporate environmental responsibilities.
The court held the company responsible for Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions generated by customers using its fuel products. TotalEnergies argues that climate change is a global issue falling under the jurisdiction of states and the international community.
The company maintains it cannot control individual consumer choices. Management contends the ruling is inconsistent with legal certainty and the freedom to conduct business.
