Apple is cutting employees’ daily budgets for third-party AI tools as part of a broader cost-control push. Some engineers’ allowance has dropped from $300 to $200 a day. Further reductions to $100 are possible. Some non-engineering teams may see daily caps as low as $25.

The budgets cover tools powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.

The cuts come as Apple’s overall research and development expenses have risen significantly, driven in part by AI infrastructure costs. CEO John Ternus is pursuing a broader effort to make the company operate more efficiently.

The move reflects a wider industry trend: companies are scrutinizing the rising costs of adopting AI across their businesses.
