BYD is exploring the establishment of a battery and component manufacturing plant in South Africa. The company announced the initiative during the launch of BYD Finance, a joint venture with banking group Absa.
The move marks a strategic shift toward localizing core power-storage technology. This approach prioritizes component manufacturing over full vehicle assembly, distinguishing BYD from regional competitors.
The investment aligns with South African government incentives designed to develop the local battery industry. To support the rollout, BYD signed a memorandum of cooperation with power utility Eskom to pilot specialized flash charging nodes.
