After Democratic gains in the U.S. midterm elections, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk suggested renewed interest in placing data centers in orbit. On November 4, he posted on X, “Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now.” The comment was widely interpreted as a response to growing political and regulatory opposition to large, energy-intensive data centers on land.

The election results, including key Democratic victories in Texas, could pose an obstacle to terrestrial data center expansion. Critics have raised concerns about environmental impacts and pressure on power grids. Musk’s comment points to space-based facilities as a possible alternative to those challenges.

The idea is not new for SpaceX, which has outlined plans for a large network of orbital data centers. The company has filed with the FCC to launch a large constellation of solar-powered satellites for that purpose. Musk has said launches could begin as early as 2027.
