S.N. Nuclearelectrica S.A. initiated a controlled shutdown of Unit 1 at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant on July 28, 2026. Management implemented the precautionary measure due to unprecedented low water levels in the Danube River. The severe drought has restricted the water supply essential for the facility's cooling process.
The company is monitoring river conditions and indicated that a prolonged drought may necessitate the shutdown of Unit 2. The Cernavoda plant currently generates approximately 20% of Romania's total electricity supply.
Nuclearelectrica shares traded 0.34% lower at 69.4 lei on the Bucharest Stock Exchange following the announcement.
