Nuclearelectrica has delayed the restart of Romania’s Cernavoda nuclear power plant until at least October 15 because of unfavorable hydrological conditions. Low water levels in the Danube, caused by severe drought, prevent the safe restart of either of the plant’s two units, a state secretary at the energy ministry confirmed. Both reactors shut down in August for the same reason.

Cernavoda produces approximately 20% of Romania’s electricity. Its continued shutdown is increasing reliance on electricity imports, especially during peak hours, and could affect electricity prices.

The government does not currently anticipate restrictions for large industrial consumers despite the delay.
