S.N. Nuclearelectrica S.A. completed a controlled shutdown of both units at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. The company halted Unit 2 on July 30 following the closure of Unit 1 earlier that week.

Record low water levels on the Danube River triggered the precautionary measure to protect plant cooling systems. The dual shutdown removes approximately 1,300 MW of capacity from the national grid.

Cernavoda typically provides nearly 20% of Romania's daily electricity consumption. Government officials now require increased domestic generation and energy imports to cover the resulting deficit.
