Qualcomm and Huawei have signed a broad, multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement covering 5G, artificial intelligence, computing and networking. It is their first patent agreement to cover 5G technologies.

Under the pact, Qualcomm will also acquire some of Huawei’s U.S. patents related to AI, computing and networking. The financial terms were not disclosed. Huawei said the deal will push the cumulative value of its patent licensing agreements above $6.9 billion upon closing.

The agreement resolves earlier disputes, including a 2020 settlement in which Huawei paid Qualcomm $1.8 billion in back-licensing fees. It is pending regulatory approval and is structured around fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles.

The agreement recognizes both companies’ technological contributions, including Qualcomm’s leadership in 5G and Huawei’s innovation in communications technology.
