Pick n Pay launched Penny, South Africa’s first fully integrated AI-powered grocery shopping companion. The feature resides within the Pick n Pay asap! delivery app. A full rollout to all customers begins on July 6, 2026.
The assistant allows shoppers to build grocery baskets using voice, text, or images in any language. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, Penny provides meal planning help and recipe inspiration. The system processes handwritten lists and product photos to add items directly to digital carts.
This innovation supports Pick n Pay’s strategy to strengthen its omnichannel offerings. The launch follows significant backend and frontend upgrades to the asap! platform completed last year.
