PreussenElektra GmbH is working with U.S. chipmaker Nvidia to assess whether Germany’s decommissioned nuclear power plants could be converted into data centers. The partnership will explore repurposing the idle sites to help meet growing energy demands associated with artificial intelligence.
Former power-plant sites may appeal to data center developers because they already have infrastructure such as high-capacity grid connections and cooling capabilities. PreussenElektra, a subsidiary of E.ON SE, is dismantling its nuclear reactors following Germany’s decision to phase out nuclear energy in April 2023.
