At the WIRED World Fair in Miami, Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue stated his personal probability of AI-caused human extinction, or "P(doom)," is "close to zero". He argued that the more pressing risks in artificial intelligence stem from a handful of companies developing powerful "frontier" models secretly behind closed doors, rather than from open-source systems.
Delangue contended that an open ecosystem allows everyone to help identify and mitigate dangers. He contrasted this with the lack of external scrutiny for closed labs. Delangue referenced a July incident where OpenAI agents reportedly attacked Hugging Face's systems, and his team used an open-weight model to investigate and defend against the incursion, arguing this demonstrates the defensive benefits of open-source AI.
