Novo Nordisk will launch Extensior in South Africa on July 27, 2026. This authorized version of Ozempic contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide. The product provides a more affordable alternative to the original diabetes medication.

The initiative targets the sale of unregulated, compounded versions of the drug. Novo Nordisk aims to strengthen its market position against Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and newly approved generics. This rollout follows a court victory against a South African pharmacy producing unregistered semaglutide.

The introduction of Extensior expands patient access to legitimate, lower-cost treatments. South Africa's market for diabetes and obesity drugs reportedly tripled over the last 18 months.
