The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved significant capacity market reforms proposed by PJM, the largest grid operator in the United States. The reforms respond to unprecedented electricity demand growth, driven largely by data centers and other large industrial loads across PJM’s 13-state territory.

The approval allows PJM to hold a special auction to secure power resources and support near-term grid reliability. It also begins to determine how the costs of managing concentrated new demand will be allocated and how grid stability will be maintained.

State-level regulatory bodies must now implement the new frameworks. This includes establishing tariffs, curtailment protocols, and cost-sharing mechanisms so new large-load customers contribute to necessary grid upgrades without affecting other consumers.
