American Electric Power (AEP) announced a $4 billion investment in a new fuel cell project to meet the rising energy demands of Google’s operations. The project is one of the most significant single investments targeting the power-intensive data center industry, which is growing rapidly as artificial intelligence expands.

AEP plans to begin construction this year, with the facility expected to be fully operational by the end of 2028.

The project reflects a growing challenge and opportunity for utilities: providing reliable, large-scale power for major technology companies. Utilities are making major infrastructure investments to attract and support hyperscale data center clients.
