The Spanish government officially extended the operating license for the Almaraz nuclear power plant until June 8, 2030. Iberdrola holds a 53% majority stake in the facility, which is co-owned by Endesa and Naturgy. The plant's two reactors were previously scheduled to shut down in November 2027 and October 2028.

The Almaraz facility currently supplies approximately 7% of Spain's total electricity demand. Madrid granted the extension to protect the electricity system and consumers from volatile prices linked to international instability. The decision followed a formal request from the owners and a favorable safety assessment from the Nuclear Safety Council in July 2026.

Government officials characterized the extension as a limited and temporary measure. The move does not alter Spain's long-term commitment to phase out all nuclear power by 2035.
