Alphabet’s Google, OpenAI and Anthropic announced the formation of the Standards Authority for Frontier AI (SAFA), a new self-regulatory body for the artificial intelligence industry. The initiative aims to establish safety and auditing frameworks for developing and deploying advanced AI models, with the goal of pre-empting direct government oversight.

SAFA plans to set standards for safety tests before third-party use, establish incident-reporting rules and define auditor qualifications. The announcement follows reports that the White House shelved a proposed executive order on AI regulation, prompting the companies to take the lead in creating a governance structure for the rapidly evolving technology.
