OpenAI is reportedly planning to buy artificial intelligence chips from Google, its competitor, according to The Information. The purchase would expand OpenAI’s computing capacity for training and running AI models. It would also diversify the company’s hardware suppliers beyond Nvidia, its primary source for GPUs, and deepen commercial ties between the two firms.

Financial terms have not been determined. A direct purchase would endorse Google’s TPU architecture, which is gaining traction as an alternative to Nvidia’s market-dominating chips.

OpenAI began renting Google TPUs in 2025. A purchase would signal a deeper commitment and follow other strategic moves: OpenAI has made its models available on Google Cloud and hired engineers to optimize its models for TPUs. Neither company has officially commented on the report.
