Finnish authorities have ordered Google to halt preparatory work at data center sites in Muhos and Kajaani. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) issued the order after allegations that Google cleared hundreds of hectares of forest and began construction before completing required environmental impact assessments. Tree and topsoil removal must stop by October 23.

The order affects a significant portion of Google’s €13 billion ($15 billion) investment in Finland, which the company has described as its largest single investment in Europe. Google says the investment will support its AI ambitions.

A Google spokesperson said the company had “fallen short of our own high standards” and would follow the agency’s guidance. The projects are expected to face delays while environmental reviews are completed.
