Fervo Energy's Cape Station power plant in Beaver County, Utah, began commercial operations on September 30, 2026. It is the world's first commercial-scale enhanced geothermal system (EGS) built on a previously undeveloped site. The project's initial phase is now delivering power to the grid.
EGS uses drilling techniques from the oil and gas industry to create reservoirs in hot, dry rock, making geothermal power accessible in more locations than conventional methods. Cape Station's launch scales up from Fervo's smaller pilot project in Nevada, which began operating in 2023.
The first phase is expected to have a capacity of approximately 100 megawatts. A 400 MW expansion is underway and planned for completion in 2028. Major power purchase agreements support the plant, including a significant agreement with Google to help power its data centers.
