Anthropic announced its AI model Claude discovered a novel enzyme system similar to CRISPR gene-editing technology. This finding represents the first published result from the company’s new in-house biology research group and physical laboratory. The discovery signals Anthropic’s expanding focus on life sciences.
Claude identified the system, named array-associated reverse transcriptases (ART), by autonomously analyzing large DNA databases. Scientists provided only high-level direction during the analysis process. The ART system features repeating DNA sequences, though its specific biological function is currently unknown. This milestone demonstrates AI’s potential to accelerate fundamental biological research.
