The Minnesota Attorney General's office raises concerns. It states Alphabet's proposed Google data center in Pine Island could cost state residents millions in electricity.
Attorney General Keith Ellison filed comments with the state's Public Utilities Commission. He argues the power agreement between Google and Xcel Energy lacks proof. This proof would show it protects other customers from necessary grid upgrade costs.
The office contends the deal violates state law. This law requires very large customers, such as a data center, to pay all attributable costs.
It warns other ratepayers could face billions in "stranded costs." This would occur if Google reduces its energy use or leaves the system.
Xcel Energy and Google maintain the agreement will benefit ratepayers. They state Google will pay for the new infrastructure.
