Equinor has canceled plans to install a second electric export compressor on its Troll C platform in the North Sea, avoiding a reduction in production from Europe’s largest natural gas field.

The decision revises the 2021 Troll West Electrification (TWEL) project plan after a reassessment of its effects on gas deliveries, value creation and emissions. The planned modification would have reduced output for up to 21 months.

Equinor says the change will make an additional 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas available to Europe during 2027 and 2028. Market conditions have changed since 2021, and the entire Troll field is now operating at maximum capacity. As a result, Equinor cannot offset a temporary production cut at Troll C as originally planned.

The decision prioritizes stable energy deliveries, but will result in higher carbon emissions than completing the project.
