Kazakhstan suspended the collection of a KZT 2.3 trillion ($5 billion) fine against the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC). Eni holds a 16.8% stake in the consortium, which operates the Kashagan oilfield.
An Atyrau court halted the enforcement procedure after NCOC challenged the actions of a court officer. The dispute originated in 2023 over alleged breaches of sulfur storage limits.
NCOC denies the accusations and has initiated international arbitration against the Kazakh government. The consortium argues that an injunction prevents collection until a final ruling is issued. The Kazakh government still intends to pursue the penalty, which remains active despite the suspension.
