Cape Fear River Watch and the Southern Environmental Law Center have formally accused Chemours of violating a 2019 consent order. In a notice letter, the groups allege that dangerous levels of toxic PFAS continue to leak from the company’s Fayetteville Works facility. They say Chemours has not met its obligations to remediate groundwater contamination or prevent PFAS discharges into the Cape Fear River.

The groups say Chemours’ own data shows the company has not achieved the PFAS discharge reduction required by the order. They also allege Chemours failed to submit a required corrective action plan for ongoing groundwater contamination.

Chemours has denied the allegations. The groups say they are prepared to return to court to enforce the consent order if the alleged violations are not addressed promptly.
