Chinese automaker BYD has put plans to sell passenger cars in the United States on hold, citing geopolitics as the main obstacle to its global expansion. Speaking at the Milken Institute Asia Summit, Executive Vice President Stella Li said a lack of certainty, visibility, and stability in the U.S. market prompted the decision.
Li described the U.S. market as “complicated” and said BYD prefers to invest in more predictable environments. The pause marks a strategic shift for the company, which has been rapidly expanding in other international markets.
BYD continues to grow global sales despite the decision. Li also called the company’s Hong Kong-listed stock “super undervalued” compared with U.S. firms. She said BYD is an engineering company with interests in solar panels and energy storage, not just cars.
