Huawei plans to boost its international smartphone market share and expand its homegrown HarmonyOS operating system globally over the next one to three years. The renewed focus on consumer electronics comes as its automotive technology venture faces pressure from a weakening electric vehicle market in China.
Deliveries of vehicles powered by Huawei technology fell for a third straight month in September. They were down 29% from a year earlier.
The push marks a major effort to rebuild Huawei’s smartphone business, which U.S. sanctions severely hampered in 2019. Consumer business chief Richard Yu said the company plans a gradual global rollout of HarmonyOS. The operating system is already deployed on more than 90 million devices in China.
The expansion would challenge the global dominance of Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.
