A federal jury in San Diego ordered Apple to pay Taction Technology more than $5.7 billion in damages, in one of the largest patent infringement awards in U.S. history. The jury found that Apple’s Taptic Engine, which provides haptic feedback in iPhones and Apple Watches, infringed two Taction patents.

Taction filed the lawsuit in 2021. An appeals court revived it after a judge had ruled in Apple’s favor in 2023.

Apple said it plans to appeal, arguing that its technology is fundamentally different from Taction’s and was not used in its products. The jury found that the infringement was not willful, so Taction cannot seek triple damages.
