The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed measures to reduce Apple's control over contactless payments on its devices. The proposals would require Apple to give rivals easier access to its Near Field Communication (NFC) technology and offer access on terms that would result in “substantially lower access fees” for competing digital wallets and banks.

The CMA says Apple's high fees and strict terms make it difficult for rivals to innovate and compete with Apple Pay. Unlike in the EU, where Apple was required to open NFC access, no competing wallet-type products have launched in the UK.

The proposals aim to support the UK's fintech sector and increase consumer choice. The CMA is consulting on the proposals until November 17, 2026, before making a final decision.
