Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is evaluating a potential expansion of its U.S. chip production in Texas as demand for artificial intelligence chips outstrips its current supply. CEO C.C. Wei said during an earnings call that the company had sent evaluation teams to the state.
A Texas expansion would be in addition to TSMC’s existing $265 billion investment in its Arizona facilities. The company is also discussing a possible role in Elon Musk’s proposed Terafab chip manufacturing complex in Texas, but says it would need to operate any facility it joins.
The Texas expansion remains under preliminary consideration. TSMC has not announced a final decision, a specific site or an investment amount.
