Vistra Corp. has completed its acquisition of Cogentrix Energy, adding approximately 5,500 MW of natural gas generation capacity to its portfolio. The deal includes 10 modern facilities in the PJM, ISO New England and ERCOT power markets. It received all necessary regulatory approvals. Vistra’s total U.S. generation capacity now stands at nearly 50,000 MW.

The acquired assets include efficient combined-cycle, combustion turbine and cogeneration plants. Vistra now owns 100% of all 10 facilities, including the Patriot and Hamilton-Liberty plants, in which Cogentrix previously held minority stakes. The acquisition advances Vistra’s strategy to expand its dispatchable generation fleet to meet growing energy demand.

In March 2024, Vistra acquired 4,000 MW of nuclear generation from Energy Harbor. In October 2025, it acquired more than 2,300 MW of natural gas plants. Company leadership described the Cogentrix assets as a strong strategic fit for Vistra’s growing portfolio.
