Vertex Pharmaceuticals reported positive Phase 2b results for inaxaplin, a treatment for APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD). The drug reduced the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio by 42.7% in patients with modest proteinuria. This clinical improvement was measured over a 13-week period.

AMKD is a progressive genetic condition and a leading cause of kidney failure in people of African ancestry. There are currently no approved therapies for the disease. Study data indicated that inaxaplin was generally safe and well-tolerated.

Vertex has completed enrollment for its pivotal Phase 2/3 AMPLITUDE trial. The company remains on track to report interim data in early 2027. Positive results from this larger study could support an application for accelerated approval in the U.S.
