The European Union has formally opposed a US administration threat to suspend diesel exports to the bloc. The ultimatum is part of a US effort to pressure European nations to release more fuel from their strategic reserves and help curb rising energy costs in the United States.
European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said an export ban would benefit neither side. She warned it could damage the EU’s trust in the United States as a dependable energy partner.
The threat adds to market volatility as global diesel supplies remain tight. Ongoing conflicts have disrupted exports from key producers, including Russia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The Trump administration faces domestic pressure over elevated fuel prices ahead of the November elections. The EU’s Oil Coordination Group is scheduled to meet on October 15 to address developments in oil and fuel markets. The meeting could be moved up if necessary.
