Walmart is expanding its partnership with robotics and AI firm Symbotic, committing approximately $6 billion to the effort. The companies plan to automate 25 of Walmart’s regional U.S. distribution centers over the next several years.

Symbotic’s AI-powered robotic platform is designed to increase storage capacity and improve the speed and accuracy of product replenishment. Walmart says the initiative will support its e-commerce operations and give customers access to a broader assortment of products.

The automation is also intended to improve in-store service through more reliable restocking, simplify work for associates and lower costs. The investment reflects the growing role of automation in competition across the high-volume, low-margin consumer staples retail sector.
