The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a preliminary investigation into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles. The probe covers 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2021-2023 Model Y units.

Regulators received 156 complaints alleging the front lower lateral link detached. This failure can lead to a sudden loss of steering control.

Most complaints indicate the suspension failure occurred without advance warning. These reported issues extend beyond the scope of two previous, smaller recalls Tesla conducted for similar lateral link problems.

The preliminary evaluation will investigate the cause, scope, and severity of the potential defect. This process could lead to a formal recall if the agency identifies a safety risk.
